It’s a big building. Besides the pretty white trim, it’s painted red. And, there appears to be a red bicycle parked in front of it. Do I really need to explain more? I say there need to be more red buildings in the world.

There’s a red dragon in the library. He swoops down from the sky along the clear walls and sets alight unsuspecting books when no one is looking. Much boring dribble has been lost this way, but thankfully our treasured tales are kept in the lower shelves. Why limit these imaginative decorations to children’s rooms? We all need to exercise the child inside on occasion, for down that path there be dragons.

The Colosseum in Rome is remebered by one and all for the ancient shenanigans that are supposed to have taken place there. Legends of the Roman Circus, of gladiator battles and wild beasts, have filtered through the ages into common knowledge. But, in this particular photo, the monument looks a little extra bloody, lit with red lights from the inside, with the fading blue sky behind it. A spectacle indeed.

The beauty is in the details. This great shot of a few brown and red autumn leaves fallen on to one of those bracket mushrooms or toadstools that grow off the side of fallen barks, is a study in showing just enough. We can see the great textures of the leaves and the mushroom, the bright red colour of the one leaf, and the rest is beautifully out of focus. There are hints of a rocky ground and the woods surrounding us, but only a hint, and that makes this image better.

The classic red and green contrast strikes again, and with this ethereal image I’m not quite sure whether to be impressed or scared. Either way, it is striking, and the woman’s piercing eyes and her red lipstick make it memorable. I’m a big fan of the red stuff anyway.
