Mime makeup in progress

In its basic form I’m sure the idea of mimes has existed since ancient times, an iconic silent performer who says a lot about the human condition. In modern form, mimes have narrowed down to a very specific performance style and a recognisable look. Love them or hate them, mimes have a very strong, distinct look which is contributed to in no small part by the accents of red they include in their elaborate make-up, a spot here, a tear there, a pair of red lips.

Once the make-up and costume is completely applied, the mime is nearly anonymous by design, an every-person, so it’s interesting to see this shot of the transformation from human being to performing symbol in this shot. The girl with the red lips and the mostly done mime make-up is touching up her dark eye lining, and you know she’s preparing to become the creature she is to be.

Shoes with red undersoles

I like shoes as much as the next girl, but I’ve not really been the most fashion savvy on the subject and the goings-on in the world of fashionable footwear. I think it was after several years of seeing and being fascinated by red under-sole shoes that I came to know of Louboutin shoes and how they’d started the whole trend before the knock-offs and me-toos spread the seed of red undersoles in women’s black stilettos in particular.

Here’s a picture of the originals then, with Louboutin emblazoned in clear and prominent style on the packaging below. Even with what little of the actual shoes are visible here, you can tell that these area classy pair of shoes for sure. Blacks are always a classic in most fashion accessories, but I guess the red sole just makes it that much more special. A little signal to flash at odd moments when the underneath of your shoes can be seen at all by anyone. You can’t see them, of course, but you know that silky red is there.

Kissing red lips framed in long red hair

There are a hundred theories about the reasons behind the attraction we feel as animal and intelligent being towards a pair of flushed, shapely lips on a face. The evolutionary psychologists point towards sexual symbolism, and psychological analysts would talk of the phase of oral fixation and the like. Regardless of the reasoning behind it, we remain very attracted and subdued and excited by a pair of red lips framed in a head of healthy hair.

As selfies of lips and hair and warmly lit skin goes, this is quite a great example. A very simple image, but the focus is one the lips and it doesn’t matter that the rest of the face is off the frame. The harsh lighting frames all of it perfectly, streaming through long hair and tantalisingly open mouth makes this perfectly sensual. Rarely do you come across photographs that, while raw, are so evocative.

Ripe prickly pear fruit

I tried a prickly pear or tuna fruit a couple of times when I was young. The red flesh of the fruits I tasted were tart and strong, a most overpowering flavour, but what what fascinated me the most about them was to see them being plucked off a cactus. Tuna fruit grow on paddle cactus (opuntia) and to to see something come off a seemingly barren desert plant, and be so colourful and flavourful, was an unexpected experience.

That’s not completely unexpected, I guess, when you consider how much the dark red fruits stand out from the pale green of the parent cactus plant. The prickly pear truly is a blossoming fruit of the desert, calling out to the creatures of the sands to come and taste and spread the seed within. This is quite the wonder of nature and I never tire of seeing pictures of this strange little red desert fruit.

Big red dumper truck

When it comes to cars and machinery, there’s nothing quite as deeply satisfying and pandering to the big kid in all of as as a large red truck. You see a pudgy looking red toy truck as a kid and somehow your little-kid mind can’t imagine that such a thing can actually exist in the real world at a real size. And then you see one and it’s so much bigger than anything you imagined. I remember how excited I was a as kid every time a fire-engine passed by. I’d have been completely in love with this sort of large red dumper truck, alas we only had yellow one where I lived. If we had red trucks like this, I’d have probably hung around road-works and building sites and stared at it all day and imagined borrowing it and going on magic adventures.
